Staying at Tokino-Kairo Kikuya in Shuzenji — the room comes with its own private hot spring bath, but waking up early to enjoy the outdoor private onsen is an absolute treat. It’s almost empty in the morning, and the atmosphere is amazing. Breakfast is served in a private room, which is perfect for solo travelers like me. Though it’s an old ryokan dating back to the Meiji era, it’s been beautifully maintained and the service is warm and attentive. The corridors are lined with old photos — Natsume Sōseki even stayed here for over two months to recuperate! I stayed in the annex building, which you reach by crossing a little suspension bridge — quite fun! There are even free popsicles by the public bath area — extra points for that. All in all, Kikuya completely fulfilled all my dreams of what a hot spring ryokan should be!
